Letter from the President…

I am excited to continue my role as president of the Oregon Long Term Care Social Workers Association.  It has been through my involvement with OLTCSWA that I have had the opportunity to meet many gifted social workers.   In addition, my network of resources has expanded and continues to grow through experiences with OLTCSWA.  I look forward to sharing these resources with other social workers in the long-term care field.  One of the many draws for me in connecting to this organization was the fact that as a long-term care social worker we are often isolated.  It is the social worker that makes up the department of one.  In my experience this isolation can make for frustration within the field.  I personally am blessed to be working within an organization where all departments work as a team, supporting each other for the good of the resident.  However, I still run into the occasional situation where it is difficult to convince my team to look at the whole picture as opposed to just the medical issues for a resident.  It has been thanks to my involvement with OLTCSWA that I now know other social workers with which I can bounce ideas or just simply vent frustrations.  My hope is that OLTCSWA will continue to strive to support, educated, and inspire social workers in long-term care.

Thank you for the work that you do.

 Tami Black

President OLTCSWA

HISTORY OF OLTCSWA

OLTCSWA was started in 1989 in an effort to create an organization specifically for social workers in long term care settings. OLTCSWA strives to be the regional leader in the ongoing definition and development of the professional role of the long term care social worker by providing representation, education, and networking.

Our Purpose

· To cooperate in the ongoing definition and
development of the professional role of the social
worker in the long term care facility.

· To provide consultation, mutual support, and resource materials to professionals delivering social services in long term care.

· To promote cooperation and understanding among long term care personnel and other advocates serving the aging and disabled.

· To interpret the social work role in the long term care setting to other professionals through planning and participating in conferences, conventions, and other educational programs.

· To develop liaisons with social work educators and planners for the aging and disabled and realistically interpret the needs and the role of the social worker in long term care.

· To represent the psychosocial needs of the aging and disabled and the role of the social worker in long term care to state and federal regulation agencies and public policy makers.
